Left for Interpretation: Petroglyphs & Artifacts
The Hedgpeth Hills face east, towards the rising sun. At one time, the hills were next to a flowing creek that supported communities of people, plants and animals. Archaic, Hohokam, and Patayan peoples passed through the area and left their mark by pecking over 1,500 symbols into the basalt boulders. We do not know the reason they left the petroglyphs, or what story the markings tell. However, we do know that each generation plays a role in changing the land by communicating their traditions. Today, the Deer Valley Rock Art Center protects the Hedgpeth Hills petroglyph site and offers an opportunity for interpretation and appreciation of cultural expressions. Arizona Centennial Fact - Celebrating 100 Years!
AZ Centennial logo

Arizona began it’s statehood by giving women the right to vote via a ballot initiative that passed overwhelmingly in November of 1912, carrying every county in the state. Perhaps it was due to our state's early support of equal rights that Arizona holds the record for the most female governors of any state in the country with a total of four, Rose Mofford, Jane Dee Hull, Janet Napolitano and our current Governor Jan Brewer.

Maurice Sendak, Author of "Where the Wild Things Are", Dies at 83
Roundly praised, intermittently censored and occasionally eaten, Mr. Sendak’s books were essential ingredients of childhood for the generation born after 1960 or thereabouts, and in turn for their children. He was known in particular for more than a dozen picture books he wrote and illustrated himself, most famously “Where the Wild Things Are,” which was simultaneously genre-breaking and career-making when it was published by Harper & Row in 1963.  Read more...

Can’t See to Read Any More? There’s Help!

The Arizona Braille and Talking Book Library, www.lib.az.us/braille, provides materials to Arizona residents who are blind, visually impaired, and physically disabled free of charge! Books are available in audio book and Braille formats. The program provides reading selections, the audio book player, and a patron's Librarian – yes, your own personal reader’s advisor! All materials are mailed and returned through the postal service and there are no additional costs with this public service. Library materials are comparable to library materials available on loan at community libraries.

The Talking Book Library provides public library services to all Arizona residents so "that all may read". The library's website is www.lib.az.us/braille. Applications for patron services can be completed, printed, and mailed to the library from the "how to apply" page. A doctor or your local librarian can certify that you are in need of these services.

The Talking Book Library now has a new digital player that is super easy to use. If you can no longer read print material or physically cannot turn pages, don’t hesitate to get signed up! For more information call 800-255-5578.

1940 United States Census Released

The 1940 U.S. Federal Census was released on April 2, 2012. Click here to access it. Ancestry Library Edition, to which the Library District subscribes, will start loading and indexing the info this year. This database can be searched in the library from the Genealogy link on the navigation bar. On April 2, 1940, there were 132,164,569 people living in America. Today, 87 percent of Americans can find a direct family link to one – or more – of them. You now have a window into every one of those 132 million lives...their names, where they lived, who shared their house, even where they were five years earlier.
